Violin Temple · Luthier Interview Preview | Liang Zhiling: Three Generations of Violin Craftsmanship, Unwavering Dedication Interview Guest Liang Zhiling, the third-generation inheritor of a violin-making family, has been engaged in violin making for over forty years. His maternal grandfather, Huang Da, established a violin workshop in Xiguan, Guangzhou in 1935, and the family's tradition of lutherie has continued to this day. In 1979, Mr. Liang Zhiling joined the Guangdong Musical Instrument Factory, studying under the internationally renowned violin restoration master Gu Jianhua. Over the following decades, he continuously pursued further studies in Germany, the United States, and Italy, absorbing the essence of various schools of lutherie to develop a highly personal violin-making system. In the international field of violin making, Mr. Liang Zhiling has received numerous accolades: • 2012: Won the Quartet Tone Award at the VSA 20th International Violin Making Competition, becoming the first Chinese luthier to receive this top honor. • 2016: VSA International Violin Making Competition Quartet Tone Award and Viola Tone Award. • 2022: Award at the VSA International Violin Making Competition. • 2024: Silver Award for Quartet Tone and Viola Tone Award at the VSA 25th International Violin Making Competition. Additionally, Mr. Liang Zhiling and his team, after years of research and development, launched an environmentally friendly varnish certified by EU SGS, achieving a significant breakthrough in lutherie materials. His son, Liang Zhenyu, has also inherited the family craft, participating in the creation of the award-winning works in 2012 and 2016. He graduated from the American School of Violin Making in 2020 and won the Bronze Award for Antique Violin at the 2025 Central International Violin Making Competition. Father and son work together, passing the torch. Interview Format This interview is the first in the Violin Temple Luthier Series, hosted by Mr. Tian Lifu, Curator of the Violin Temple. Special guest participant is Mr. Hao Li, Chief Advisor of the Violin Temple and former solo violinist of the Central Orchestra. A luthier and a violinist meet face-to-face, exploring the craftsmanship, sound, and heritage of violins from the dual perspectives of making and playing—the maker and the player will engage in a dialogue about sound.
