Violin Temple Luthier Interview Series Launches: Dual Conversations on Violin Making and Bow Making, Bringing Artisans from Behind the Scenes to the Forefront.

Beijing, May 15, 2026 — Today, the Violin Temple Treasure Hall officially launched its luthier interview series, with two major interviews completed in the museum's 640-square-meter professional acoustic space. The first luthier interview featured Mr. Liang Zhiling, a third-generation inheritor of a violin-making family, while the first bow maker interview was led by Mr. Pu Chunming, a renowned bow maker from Jiangsu. The successful completion of these two interviews marks a substantive step forward in the Violin Temple's core mission of "making luthiers seen."

Violin Temple Luthier Interview Series Launches: Dual Conversations on Violin Making and Bow Making, Bringing Master Craftsmen into the Spotlight Event Overview The Violin Temple Luthier Interview Series, initiated by the Violin Temple Treasure Hall, is a long-term interview project designed to provide luthiers and bow makers with a professional platform to engage with the public, bringing these long-hidden artisans into the industry and public eye. The luthier sessions are co-hosted by curator Tian Lifu and chief advisor Hao Li, fostering a deep dialogue between "the makers" and "the players." The bow maker sessions are hosted solely by curator Tian Lifu, focusing on the more "invisible" group of bow makers. Interview content will be published in the "Master Column" on the Violin Temple official website. First Luthier Interview: Liang Zhiling — Three Generations of Legacy, International Glory Mr. Liang Zhiling hails from a family of violin makers. His maternal grandfather, Huang Da, established a violin workshop in Xiguan, Guangzhou, in 1935, and the family's tradition of violin making has continued for over 90 years. In 1979, Liang Zhiling joined the Guangdong Musical Instrument Factory, studying under international violin restoration master Gu Jianhua. With over 40 years of experience in violin making, he is a key representative bridging tradition and modernity in contemporary Chinese lutherie. On the international stage, Liang Zhiling has achieved numerous accolades: in 2012, he won the VSA International Violin Making Competition Quartet Tone Award, becoming the first Chinese luthier to receive this honor. In 2016, he again won the VSA Quartet Tone Award and the Viola Tone Award. He continued to win awards in 2022 and 2024, including the Quartet Tone Silver Award and the Viola Tone Award in 2024. His environmentally friendly varnish process has passed the EU SGS certification, meeting international standards in both craftsmanship and environmental protection. Notably, Liang Zhiling's son, Liang Zhenyu, has also inherited the family craft, deeply involved in the production of the award-winning works from 2012 and 2016. He graduated from the American School of Violin Making in 2020 and won the Bronze Award for Antique Violin at the Central International Competition in 2025. Three generations, one legacy—a vivid microcosm of a Chinese luthier family. Mr. Liang Zhenyu also appeared in this interview, sharing the stage with his father, Liang Zhiling. As the fourth-generation luthier in the family, Liang Zhenyu recounted his journey from graduating from the American School of Violin Making to returning to China to pursue lutherie, as well as his creative insights from winning the Central International Competition. The father-son dialogue between two generations of luthiers allowed the audience to witness how traditional Chinese violin-making techniques are revitalized through inheritance. This interview was co-hosted by curator Tian Lifu and chief advisor Hao Li. Mr. Hao Li, a former solo violinist with the Central Orchestra, engaged in an in-depth discussion with Liang Zhiling and Liang Zhenyu from the dual perspectives of making and playing. They explored the steadfastness and evolution of family heritage, experiences and insights from international competitions, and the paths and challenges of bringing traditional Chinese lutherie to the world. The face-to-face interaction between luthier and performer presented the audience with two indispensable yet rarely intersecting perspectives in the art of the violin. First Bow Maker Interview: Pu Chunming — Craftsmanship on the Bow, Repeated International Honors Mr. Pu Chunming is a renowned bow maker from Jiangsu, with years of deep expertise in bow making. His works have repeatedly won international awards. In 2019, Pu Chunming won the Gold Award for Cello Bow and the Bronze Award for Violin Bow at the Malta Bow Making Competition, and the Silver Award for Viola Bow at the China International Violin and Bow Making Competition. In 2024, he won the Silver Award for Cello Bow at the 5th China International Violin and Bow Making Competition. In 2025, he received the Cello Bow Making Award at the Cristoforo Landino Cup in Italy, showcasing the strength and reputation of Chinese artisans in the international bow-making field. This interview was hosted by curator Tian Lifu, focusing on the more "invisible" group of bow makers in the violin industry. Although the bow is a key partner in violin performance, the craftsmanship and contributions of bow makers are often overlooked by the public. In the interview, Mr. Pu Chunming shared his bow-making journey and technical insights, allowing the audience to approach the precise and profound world of bow making. The Profound Significance of the Interview Series The completion of these two interviews marks not only the beginning of the Violin Temple Luthier Interview Series but also affirms the core positioning of Violin Temple: "Let luthiers be seen, let good instruments fetch good prices." For a long time, the exquisite skills and industry contributions of luthiers and bow makers have remained largely unknown to the public, and the value of outstanding works has been insufficiently recognized by the market. Through this interview series, Violin Temple provides a platform for artisans to express themselves professionally and showcase their work, enabling audiences and practitioners to understand the craftsmanship and stories behind every instrument and bow, thereby promoting the deserved market value recognition of exceptional works. Looking Ahead The Violin Temple Treasure Hall will continue to advance the Luthier Interview Series, inviting more luthiers and bow makers to participate, presenting the beauty of craftsmanship and the spirit of artisans through in-depth dialogues. Interview content will be published in the "Master Column" on the Violin Temple official website. Stay tuned.
