Pastoral Symphony Youth Orchestra Good Deeds Have Been Rewarded B-Level Orchestra Launch Receives Enthusiastic Response from Community Residents June 24, 2026 · Wednesday · Huilongguan Jinyu International Community Rehearsals Free, Performances Free, Competitions Free Orchestra: Jinyu International Pastoral Symphony Youth Orchestra (B-Level Orchestra · Zero-Basics Entry) Time: Every Wednesday, 18:00–19:00 Violin Class / 19:00–20:00 Cello Class Location: Huilongguan Jinyu International Community Orchestra Director: Tian Lifu Artistic Director: Professor Tian Yuan On the afternoon of June 24, the launch ceremony of the Jinyu International B-Level Orchestra of the Pastoral Symphony Youth Orchestra was held in the Huilongguan Jinyu International Community. To everyone’s surprise and delight, the rehearsal hall was filled with parents and children—the community residents responded directly with their actions. This support and feedback brought great joy. Doing charity orchestra work, good deeds have been rewarded. The B-Level Orchestra is the zero-basics entry-level orchestra of the Pastoral Symphony. No musical foundation is required; teaching starts from scratch. Simply put, it is a free training course, following the same model as instrument training classes in elite primary schools in Beijing, but with a lower threshold—not only is teaching free, but instrument rental is also available: violin from 50 yuan/month, cello from 120 yuan/month. Speech: Remove the Threshold, Give Children a Chance to Try At the launch ceremony, Pastoral Symphony Orchestra Director Tian Lifu addressed the parents and children. He spoke plainly: Many children in Beijing want to learn instruments but cannot afford to—not because they lack talent, but because the threshold is too high—so high that many ordinary families find it unattainable even to look at, and children never even get a chance to try. What our charity orchestra aims to do is remove this threshold, so that children from ordinary families also have the opportunity to access art. The so-called free rehearsals, free performances, and free competitions are not gimmicks; they are things we and the community are earnestly doing. — Tian Lifu, Director of Pastoral Symphony Regarding the function of the free class, Tian Lifu made it clear: It gives children a chance to try—to see if they can learn music and whether they like it. If they try and like it, they continue; if it’s not for them, it’s still better than never having had the chance to try. In his speech, Tian Lifu specifically thanked the leaders and staff of the Jinyu International Community. Without them providing the venue and supporting the orchestra, this event would not have been possible. A community willing to offer space for children’s free music education is no small feat—many communities have space but never thought to do this, or thought about it but never acted. Jinyu International did. Professor Tian Yuan Lets Children "Play" with Music After the speech, Professor Tian Yuan, Artistic Director and Conductor of the Pastoral Symphony, took the stage. This gray-haired elder showed no airs; he directly took his instrument and walked among the children, making the cello and violin produce different timbres, letting the children guess and feel. Then came the "hands-on" part—children touched and held the violins, feeling the sensation of the bow moving across the strings. Some children refused to put the instrument down after holding it for the first time; others carefully drew the bow, their eyes full of curiosity. Professor Tian Yuan accompanied each child one by one, without rushing or urging, simply letting the children "get acquainted" with the instruments. This is what the B-Level Orchestra aims to do: first, make contact; first, feel; first, let children know if they like it, then make the next decision. Cello and Violin Classes Launch Simultaneously The Jinyu International B-Level Orchestra’s cello and violin classes launched at the same time, with rehearsals every Wednesday—18:00–19:00 for violin class, 19:00–20:00 for cello class. Both classes start together, allowing children to choose the instrument they prefer from the beginning. Far fewer people learn cello than violin, but the demand is no less. Changping District No. 2 Middle School has a Chinese orchestra, and No. 1 Middle School has a symphony orchestra, both needing cellists. Scarcity brings value—children who learn cello will have more opportunities in future school admissions. Violin, on the other hand, forms the foundation of the string section, and orchestras have a strong demand for excellent violinists. Both paths are open; just choose what the child likes.
