In running this public welfare orchestra, good deeds have indeed been rewarded. The B-Level Orchestra is Pastoral Symphony’s beginner-level ensemble, requiring no prior musical foundation—teaching starts from scratch. Simply put, it is a free training course, similar in format to the instrumental training classes in Beijing’s top primary schools, but with a lower threshold—not only is teaching free, but instrument rental is also available, starting at 50 RMB/month for violins and 120 RMB/month for cellos. Speech: Removing the threshold, giving children a chance to try At the launch ceremony, Pastoral Symphony Director Tian Lifu addressed the parents and children. He spoke plainly: Many children in Beijing want to learn instruments but cannot afford to—not because they lack talent, but because the threshold is too high, so high that many ordinary families find it unattainable, and children never even get a chance to try. This gray-haired elder showed no airs; he directly walked among the children with his instrument, making the cello and violin produce different timbres, letting the children guess and feel. Then came the hands-on segment—the children touched and held the instruments, feeling the bow move across the strings. Some children refused to put down the instrument after holding it for the first time, while others carefully drew the bow, their eyes full of curiosity. Professor Tian Yuan accompanied each child one by one, without rushing or urging, simply letting them "get acquainted" with the instruments. This is what the B-Level Orchestra aims to do: first, make contact, first, feel, first, let children know if they like it, and then make the next decision. Cello and violin classes launched simultaneously The Jinyu International B-Level Orchestra’s cello and violin classes launched at the same time, with rehearsals every Wednesday—18:00–19:00 for violin class, 19:00–20:00 for cello class. Both classes run concurrently, allowing children to choose the instrument they prefer from the start. Cello players are far fewer than violinists, but demand is no less. Changping District No. 2 Middle School has a Chinese orchestra, and No. 1 Middle School has a symphony orchestra, both needing cellists. Scarcity brings value—children learning cello will have more opportunities in future admissions. Violin, on the other hand, forms the foundation of the string section, and orchestras have equally strong demand for excellent violinists. Both paths are open—choose what the child likes.
